Daily Dig #24: They want it fast, but they don't want flaws. I'm a girl's best friend. Can you cut? I can cut cause I'm a rough gem.

Islands - Rough Gem
It's hard to imagine the Islands being new to anyone's ears, but if anything, here's a nice little "gem", if you will. As can usually be expected, there's great lyrical imagery and sweet up-beats.

Daily Dig #22: Slight of hand won't separate your body from the dirt you're standing on today

Modest Mouse - You're the Good Things
Modest Mouse's EP Everywhere And His Nasty Parlour Tricks is frequently one of my favorite albums. Depth of lyrical content and musical creativity is something Modest Mouse never fails to excel in.

Daily Dig #20: I could not recall a more perfect fall cause when I looked up into your eyes, it didn't hurt at all.

The Postal Service - Be Still My Heart
We've all heard Such Great Heights and the various, excessive covers of it, which can never, will never, and should never measure up to the original, imvho. Be Still My Heart is one of their lesser known songs. I'm sure I found it by pure luck. It's one of their best (yes, I said it; best) songs.

Daily Dig #19: If Noah had the benefit of hindsight on his ship, he could have snatched two unicorns and left behind the m. f-ing pigs.

Aesop Rock - Pigs
This isn't one you'll want to share with Mom & Pop, kay?
Yeah, yeah, it's been a while. I'm taking nineteen hours.
Things is crazy. Wish me luck at the callback tonight!

Daily Dig #18: We'll both be pale and gloomy. If I am a monster, she is a monster too.

Stakka Bo - Monsters

From the soundtrack for the film Spun.

Daily Dig #17: Brothers like me know to be squeaky clean, play it cool for the parents.

Natalie Portman's Shaved Head - Me + Yr Daughter
Natalie Portman's Shaved Head's debut album Glistening Pleasure explodes with high energy, dirty beats, and sometimes humorously ridiculous lyrics (as in Beard Lust). All I can say about this track is... well, if I were to ever consider participating in an amateur drag show, this would be my performance song of choice. I'll leave you with that scorching mental image and attempt to win back your respect at another time.

Daily Dig #15: Are you hoping for a miracle?

Steve Aoki - Helicopter
(Weird Science Remix, Feat. Peaches, With Bloc Party

As a Bloc Party listener, I'll check out practically any remix of their music. Especially Helicopter. The song takes a completely different tone in this one. Steve Aoki is an editing genius which is obvious after listening to three or more tracks from the meticulous album Pillowface And His Airplane Chronicles.

Daily Dig #12: How 'bout the tree back your house where the owls go?

Architecture in Helsinki - The Owls Go
Oh, Architecture in Helsinki... What can be said? These are a couple of interesting folk from down under who just like to create exquisitely strange tunes. The AIH fans who started with In Case We Die or Places Like This might have a giant question mark above their head due to the frenetic, somewhat jazzy style of this song. Shrug it off; the song's pretty rad.

Daily Dig #11: To see something in me is to fall in love with a B film.

Faded Paper Figures - B Film
B Film is without-a-doubt my favorite track from their debut album, Dynamo. What gets me are the viral samples and clever lyrics. Their Postal Service feel is made better with a different electronic flavor. If you dig this song, don't miss Metropolis or Polaroid Solution.

Daily Dig #10: I know I question things too quickly, but I've never questioned if I've loved.

Regina Spektor - Aquarius
By now, Regina Spektor should be a household name. If you haven't caught on to Soviet Kitsch, you probably at least recognize the song Fidelity from her most recent album Begin to Hope. That song at the end of the Prince Caspian film? Yep, Regina.
Well, through piracy, one can find some live recordings of albumless material. These songs are actually some of my favorites of Regina's vast musical repertoire. Aquarius is one such song. While the sun doesn't move into Aquarius until round abouts the 21st of this month (I'm an astro nerd, among other things), I feel this song is an appropriate way to start off the year.
Yeah, 2009!

Daily Dig #9: You take me the way I am.

Ingrid Michaelson - The Way I Am
Watch out for this one. It's one of those songs. You know, the ones so addicting that you listen over and over until they get stuck in the ole noggin, or just rack up astronomical play counts on last.fm. That is, if you're a softie for acoustic guitar, hand claps, upbeat yet dreamy vocals, and Cloud 9 inspired lyrics (the way I am [heh heh]).

Daily Dig #8: GO! TEAM!

The Go! Team - Huddle Formation
Today's been pretty upbeat, so I'm going with this high-energy ditty from their first full-length album Thunder, Lightning, Strike.
Okay, it's hardly a ditty... this song is more like an anthem. For fun.
In the right setting, even the most stoic of teenagers could probably be tempted to at least jump around like a two year old while listening.
Or whatever.

Daily Dig #7: I get this writer's block. It comes as quite a shock.

Just Jack - Writer's Block
I'll let Jack speak for himself, but if you find it funky, be sure to check out the rest of Overtones.

Daily Dig #6: Penelope, shoot the apple off my head.

Of Montreal - Penelope
In my very humble opinion, this track is one of the most overlooked on Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies. Penelope is the namesake for a very dear friend of mine, but unfortunately, whenever I attempt to explain this, even the most enthusiastic Of Montreal listeners give the same blank look about this song. Oh sure, talk about Gronlandic Edit or simply mention Antarctica, and they're all about it. Penelope? Not so much.
/rant
Please, listen and enjoy this true exhibition of Kevin Barnes' dual personality/musicality. To hear the matured growth of the seed planted in this album, be sure to give Skeletal Lamping a listen or five. Just sayin'.
